Luka Oman

Friends of Animals Association

Luka Oman is a well-known animal rights activist and the long-standing president of the Friends of Animals Association, one of the most prominent animal protection organisations in Croatia. For more than two decades, the association has worked to promote animal rights and an ethical, non-violent relationship with animals, contributing significantly to many positive changes in Croatian animal protection legislation, including the ban on killing animals in shelters, the ban on circuses with wild animals, and the ban on fur farming.

During his public engagement, Luka Oman also served as an advisor to the Minister of Agriculture, where he contributed to improving the legislative framework related to animal protection and responsible treatment of animals. Through continuous communication with representatives of local and national authorities, he advocates for the implementation of the Animal Protection Act and related regulations, and has lobbied for the introduction of preventive measures to reduce animal abandonment.

He has delivered hundreds of presentations, meetings, and discussions with leaders of local and regional communities, participated in initiating neutering programmes in Roma settlements, and encouraged the construction of animal shelters. He regularly gives lectures on animal protection in schools and appears in public, while the association collaborates with numerous international organisations.

For his work, in 2018 he received the special award “Krunoslav Sukić” for the promotion of peacebuilding, non-violence, and human rights.
